Peggle Deluxe Review Print E-mail

Peggle is the most addictive casual game I have played in a while. It is especially so because I have someone to compete against for the high score in each of the levels. The idea behind this game is very simple. Remove as many of the coloured pegs as possible by hitting them with the designated dropped ball. The dropped shot is very bouncy and should hit (eliminate) a lot of the pegs as it makes its way to the bottom of the window. There is a lot of skill required to get the ball to hit at just the right angle to make the most of each shot. However, after that first contact, the game is all luck. Just as in pinball, you will find yourself moving your body around trying to influence how the ball is moving to get the successful contacts. There are two main goals in each level: get a high score and/or clean out all the pegs.

Every blue peg eliminated is worth 10 points and each orange peg is 100. You get ten shots for each level. There are also a lot of bonus points awarded. If the purple peg is hit, all blue peg values are increased by 50X for that shot. A long bounce hit from one side of the window to the far side could get you 25,000 points. If all the orange pegs are eliminated, then the bottom of the screen changes to five catching areas worth 10,000,  50,000 or 100,000 bonus points. If you can eliminate all the balls, then the bottom catching areas are all 100,000 points. This is just a small list of the bonus points. To make the high list for a level requires about 300,000 points to start with. The more people that play, the harder it is to make it on the list.

There is a bucket at the bottom that moves back and forth at a constant speed. You have no control over it but if your dropped ball should fall into it, you get an extra shot. With some careful planning as to when to release the shot, you can get a few extra turns for each level. Getting over 25,000 on one shot also gets you a free ball. You will need as many free balls as you can get in order to clear a level. If you miss a shot completely and hit nothing but air, the game gives you a 50/50 chance of losing the ball or getting a replacement.

Another factor in play is the green peg. There are two of these each level and you are given ten choices as to what will happen when they are hit. Unfortunately, the choice has to be made before the round starts and both green pegs give the same result. My favourite is the multiball. When the green peg is hit, the shot splits into two balls. Points add up better with two bouncing balls. Also if the moving bucket at the bottom can scoop up both balls, a bonus of 100,000 points is awarded. My daughter likes the magic ball which awards a variety of things such as the magic hat which increases the sphere of contact for your shot or provides triple points on that shot. That is especially good if you can combine it with the purple peg.

When you first start the game, you are taken to the "Adventure" play which is really a tutorial of what you can expect out of the game. Your points count towards high scores for each level as soon as you start play even though this is a tutorial. The instructions are very thorough and in no time at all you become a Peggle master. It is here that you learn about all the coloured pegs and how to gain the maximum with each shot. You also learn about the ten different characters whose power you invoke when hitting the green pegs.

Once you have worked your way through the "Adventure" play you are now ready for the 50 levels of "Quick Play". Here you try to get the highest score possible and also clear all the pegs from each level. I hear there is a special award for clearing all 55. I am nowhere near that point. There is also a "Duel" play where you compete one shot at a time against another player in the same level. This is simply for bragging rights. The last game play is the "Challenge". This is 75 levels with specific tasks to complete. With all these types of game play and levels you will be enjoying Peggle for many, many hours.

The game is immediately paused if you click off of it. You can thus deal with any other application and your spot in that game is still there when you come back. I like the fact that you can leave in the middle of a round and not be penalized. The game is not timed. You can play a level, leave, and come back at any time. You can get satisfaction out of playing for 5 minutes or a couple of hours. The problem is that once you start you don't want to leave until you clear a level or make the high list.

The sounds and the graphics are very pleasing to the senses. Each level has a theme to it that is reflected in the way the pegs are arranged. They might be stationary or rotating as in the wheels of a car,  or waving up and down as waves at a beach. The movement  of course increases the luck factor as it becomes harder and harder to predict where the bounce will take the ball next. You can play using the full screen or with a smaller window. The accuracy of your shots might improve with the larger screen. It is important that you judge the angle of the collision to get a favourable bounce. The music is alright to begin with but you may find yourself choosing to remove the music and/or the sound effects. The best sound effect comes when you are about to hit the last orange peg in the level. The screen changes to a magnification of the hit if you are close to making contact. This sometimes leads to a false alarm as the ball just misses your target. Once the hit is made you are entertained with Beethoven's Ode to Joy and a plethora of fireworks until the ball falls into a slot at the bottom.
